Combustible-gas alarms and carbon-monoxide alarms are not interchangeable. A fuel-gas alarm is intended to warn about specific combustible gases named for that model. A carbon-monoxide alarm responds to CO, an odorless and colorless poisonous gas produced by incomplete combustion.
What each device detects

Combination products exist, but the label must specifically identify every hazard the unit is designed and evaluated to detect. Similar-looking devices can contain entirely different sensors.
Why a home may need more than one alarm type
A home with fuel-burning appliances can face both fuel leakage and carbon-monoxide hazards. CO can be produced when fuel does not burn completely, even when there is no raw-fuel leak. Conversely, a methane or propane leak is not something a single-function CO alarm is designed to detect.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends CO alarms on every level of the home and outside sleeping areas. Smoke alarms should be installed on every level, outside sleeping areas and inside bedrooms. Follow local code and the manufacturer’s instructions.
Placement is not the same
CO mixes through the air, while methane rises and propane settles lower. Fuel-gas alarm placement therefore depends on the target gas and the model. A combination alarm must be installed exactly as its instructions specify; do not average or improvise the placement rules for separate devices.
What to check before buying or installing
- the exact hazards and gas types listed on the label;
- recognized certification or listing for the intended residential use;
- power source and battery backup;
- audibility, testing schedule and end-of-life signal;
- installation instructions and local code requirements.
Respond to the hazard, not just the device
If you smell odorized natural gas or suspect a fuel-gas leak, leave without operating switches, phones, engines or flames in the area, then call 911 and the gas utility from a safe location. If a CO alarm sounds or anyone has possible CO-exposure symptoms, move to fresh air and call emergency services. Do not re-enter until responders say it is safe.
