There is no single correct mounting height or room for every gas alarm. Placement depends on the fuel gas, the alarm’s sensor and power design, the manufacturer’s published instructions and applicable local code.
Start with the gas the alarm is designed to detect
Confirm the fuel used in the home and the gases named on the alarm label. Natural gas is primarily methane and is lighter than air. Propane is heavier than air. Because they collect differently, a location suitable for one gas may be wrong for the other.
A combination combustible-gas and carbon-monoxide alarm can also have model-specific placement requirements. Do not apply the instructions from a single-function device to a combination alarm.
Follow the exact manual
The manufacturer’s instructions should specify:
- permitted wall, ceiling or outlet mounting;
- height and distance from fuel-burning appliances;
- rooms or environmental conditions to avoid;
- power, battery-backup and audible-alarm requirements;
- testing, cleaning and replacement intervals.
NFPA research found meaningful differences among manufacturer recommendations, which is why a generic distance or mounting height is not a safe substitute for the product manual.
Avoid common planning errors
- Choosing by outlet convenience: an available outlet does not prove the sensor is at the right height for the target gas.
- Mounting directly beside an appliance: some manuals require separation to reduce nuisance alarms or contamination.
- Blocking airflow: curtains, furniture, cabinets or enclosed spaces can prevent air from reaching the sensor.
- Ignoring ventilation and moisture: windows, vents, fans, steam, grease and aerosols can affect some alarms. Follow the model’s prohibited-location list.
- Assuming one alarm covers every hazard: smoke, carbon monoxide and combustible gases require the appropriate listed devices or a specifically evaluated combination unit.
Check audibility and maintenance
Place alarms where their warning can be heard in occupied and sleeping areas as required by the product instructions and local code. Test with the built-in test control at the schedule stated in the manual. Never test for gas detection with a flame or by deliberately releasing fuel.
If you suspect a leak
Do not stay inside to inspect the detector location. Leave the area, avoid flames, engines, phones and electrical switches in the suspected leak area, and call 911 and the gas utility from a safe location.
