How to Detect a Gas Leak at Home: Warning Signs You Should Never Ignore

Natural gas is widely used for cooking and heating. Because a leak can create a fire or explosion hazard, the priority is to recognize possible warning signs and leave—not to search for the source.

Possible signs of an odorized natural-gas leak

A rotten-egg or sulfur-like odor

Natural gas is naturally odorless, so utilities add an odorant to help people recognize a leak. The added odor is commonly described as rotten eggs or sulfur.

Hissing or roaring

An unusual hissing or roaring sound near a gas appliance, line, meter or pipeline area can indicate escaping gas.

Unusual outdoor conditions

Near a pipeline right-of-way, dead or discolored vegetation, blowing dirt, mist or bubbling water can be warning signs. Do not approach the area to investigate.

A gas alarm

Treat an alarm as a warning. A residential combustible-gas alarm detects only the gas types and concentrations specified for that model. A smoke alarm or a single-function carbon-monoxide alarm does not detect methane or propane.

What to do immediately

U.S. PHMSA guidance for a suspected natural-gas emergency emphasizes avoiding anything that could create an ignition source:

  1. Leave the area and help others leave if it is safe to do so.
  2. Do not strike a match, create a flame, start an engine, use a phone in the suspected leak area, or turn electrical switches on or off.
  3. From a safe location well away from the leak, call 911 and the gas utility’s emergency number.
  4. Do not return until emergency responders or the utility say it is safe.

Do not use symptoms to identify the hazard

Headache, dizziness, nausea and fatigue are recognized warning symptoms of carbon-monoxide exposure, which is a different hazard from a combustible-gas leak. If anyone feels ill or a CO alarm sounds, move to fresh air and call emergency services from a safe location. Do not try to determine the gas by symptoms alone.

What can a home gas alarm detect?

There is no universal answer. Some alarms detect methane, some detect propane, and some combination units detect more than one fuel gas and carbon monoxide. Check the exact label and manual. UL Solutions notes that CO alarms do not detect methane or other combustible gases unless the product is specifically designed and evaluated as a combination alarm.

Where should an alarm be installed?

Use the instructions for the exact alarm and the target gas. Methane rises and propane settles lower, so placement can differ. Do not rely on a generic “near the stove” rule or copy the location of a different model.
